A toolkit for global citizenship education and equity in educational assessment
Educational inequity is a persistent challenge across the globe. Due to its relevance, access to ‘inclusive and equitable quality education’ is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ratified by the United Nations General Assembly. We approach assessment from an educational equity perspective and aim to explore ways of making primary school assessment more equitable.
This toolkit was developed by teacher trainers and students at ITEps (International Teacher Education for Primary Schools), together with researchers from the research group on Multilingualism & Literacy at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and from the professorship for Global Citizenship and Bilingual Education of the University of Amsterdam.
The toolkit explores how engaging in forms of critical citizenship education—an umbrella term to address educational approaches at the crossroads between citizenship education and critical pedagogy—in combination with exploring approaches towards culturally (and linguistically) responsive pedagogies may improve the educational pathways of linguistic and culturally diverse pupils during primary education.

Duration
When using the toolkit, the following time frames are a good estimate of what to expect:
- To engage with all content will take around 180 minutes (3 hours).
- To engage with some content and to skip over some nodes will take around 90 minutes (1.5 hours).
- At various intervals, activities are offered that can be used by a team of teachers, such as in the context of school development. These activities may take longer but are voluntary and not strictly necessary.
